VLADIMIR LENIN : GALICIAN UKRAINE AND RUSSIAN UKRAINE. 1922

TUCKER-PUTIN. NUVOROSSIYA HISTORY LESSON

This is an attempt to briefly describe why Lenin formed the modern entity of Ukraine and what it has meant today. It offers background information necessary to understand the “root causes” to this horrible war. Without knowledge of these “root causes” you absolutely can not understand this war.

GALICIA

Most people know the Galicia that is a part of Spain. The lesser known Galicia has a long history and was located in Central Europe. With the three partitions of Poland in 1772,1793,1795, Austria’s Maria Teresa obtained Polish free Galicia which became the northern part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Galicia’s capital is considered today to be Lviv in Western Ukraine. In the Polish partitions Russia received Ruthenia. Before that Catherine the Great added Ukraine which met “Borderland”to the Ottoman’s . This was during the defeat of the Ottomans (1769-74). Russo-Turkish wars and the three successive partitions of Poland cited above during Catherine's reign brought much of the rest of modern Ukraine under Russian rule. The region had spent centuries under Polish-Lithuanian control. Catherine's victories enabled Russia to establish a warm water porta in Crimea and Odessa. These areas today are primarily inhabited by Russian speakers.

PARIS 1919-1920

At the Paris Peace Conference,1919, new countries were created out of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Galicia was not included as one of these new countries. At the time however, from Lviv which had been returned to Poland, Galician Nationalism began to take root. Its leader was Stephan Bandera. The cause was a continued, renewed Galician Nation under the guise of Ukrainian Ultranationalism at the expense of Poland and Russia. Lviv, under the control of Poland incarcerated Bandera and his followers. The 20’s,30’s,40’s was a period of Fascism in Europe and Lviv was a hotbed. Bandera’s associates in the Polish court trials famously gave the Nazi salute. They would prevail and spread their ethnic cleansing during WWII in collaboration with Germany.

1918 BREST-LITOVSK AND THE BRIEF FIRST UKRAINIAN GOVERNMENT

During the invasion of the Russian Empire in WWI and after the surrender of the Bolsheviks to the Germans at Brest-Litovsk (1918), the Germans installed the First Ukrainian Government located in Kiev. It lasted a few months. The Russians had just had the Bolshevik Revolution, surrendered to Germany and was involved in a civil war with the White Russians. The Whites along with the Germans had occupied the greater part of Ukraine. After the defeat of Germany and the White Russians the neophyte First Ukrainian Government was eliminated and The Soviets took back Ukraine.

LENIN 1922

The Reds defeated both the Whites and the Galician-Ukrainians. In 1922 Lenin formed the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic as an integral part of the USSR. To do this he combined Eastern and Western Ukraine. In a recent interview with Tucker Carlson, Vladimir Putin seemed perplexed when he mentioned Lenin’s decision, probably thinking that the Russian speaking Eastern section should have remained in Russia. Last week Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov shed some light on Lenin’s decision. Lavrov believed that Lenin, by doing this was able to more effectively control the troublesome Western Ukrainians. I interpret “these people to control” being the Galician revanchist as reflected in my short story above.

WWII. 1941-1945

WWII witnessed the cooperation of the Western Ukrainian Banderites with the Nazi Germans in the murdering of Jews, Poles and Russians. The Banderites wished to create an ethnically pure Ukraine. Seeing the war turning against the Germans, the Banderites turn-coated and sided with the CIA. This enabled them to avoid Nuremberg and escape to Britain, USA and significantly, Canada. They left their war crimes behind.

There ancestors are still present in the USA. Here is their monument to Bandera and associates in Ellenville, NY just off the New York Thruway. They hold a children’s scout camp here in the summer.

Many of the Galician diasporic progeny returned to Ukraine to help fight for an ethnically pure country. Along with other ultranationalists they have held power since the USA lead coup d’etat on the Maidan in 2014. As a result symbols of Ukrainian Ultranationalism abound.

NOVOROSSIYA

But there is the other chapter in this story. The other part is what Putin referred to as “Novorossiya” during the recent Tucker Carlson, two-hour interview in the Kremlin. That is the Eastern part of Russian-speaking Ukraine that Lenin joined with the Western part to form the Soviet Republic of Ukraine in 1922. These people in Novorossiya are essentially Russians whose Russian heritage goes back centuries. They speak Russian and are Russian Orthodox Christians. Their schools teach in Russian. There newspapers and television programs are in Russian. Their ancestors are buried in Russian cemeteries. They live between the border of Russia and the eastern side of the Dneiper river. On the right side of the river the live in Odessa, Mykoliav, Nikopol, Western Zaporozia, Western Kherson.

AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY

So we have two Ukrainian communities, one from Galicia the other from Russia; both lived together peacefully. That is until the Maidan Coup d’etat in 2014 when the resurgent Ukrainian Ultra-Right forcefully took power on the Maidan under the direction of American Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, a graduate of Brown University. Nuland’s objective was to use the revitalized Ultra-Nationalist as a battering ram against Russia with the objective of the breakup of her hated Russia. It was another American directed “Color Revolution “ similar to those in Belarus and Georgia. Stefan Bandera had been reborn and frequent torchlight parades celebrated it. New monuments were built, streets renamed and the Russian language forbidden. They currently rule Ukraine and direct the war.

WHAT THE WAR IS ABOUT

Subsequent to the Maidan Coup in 2014, the Revanchist Ukrainians began to take Russian culture out of the schools in Crimea, Odessa and Eastern Ukraine, (Novorossiya). Buttressed by Nuland and NATO, they began to attack the Donbas. After they broke two peace accords with Lugansk and Donets, (Minsk One and Two), they intensified their bombing of woman and children tenfold just a week before the Russian invasion. Up to then the Ukrainian bombing of the Russian speaking Donbas had killed 14,500 citizens according to the OECD. With the renewed intense bombing of civilians the OECD immediately withdrew after eight years of recording and monitoring the conflict. They had had enough.

THE SOLUTION

The solution to this terrible war lies in knowing the historical background to the issue. Nuland, whose heritage is Ukrainian, knows the background and has used it to efface Russian Ukrainians in order to promote the American, ill-conceived foreign policy of breaking up Russia. Nuland was the chief advisor to Dick Cheney on the illegal invasion of Iraq that killed a million people. Nuland is an aggressive promoter of war and American hegemony. Having been finally deposed at the State Department, she now teaches her Russophobic Ultranationalism at Columbia University! She is an example of the plethora of Russophobic professors at Harvard, Yale, Brown, Georgetown and Stanford.

Understanding all this makes finding a solution to this horrible war a little easier. The current TRUMP TEAM is unfamiliar with the history or the nuts and bolts of the issue.

As Lenin understood it in 1922 THERE ARE TWO UKRAINES. They were ineffaceable until Victoria Nuland came around. One Ukraine was needed in her ethnic cleansing and as her battering ram against the other, Novorossiya. The Ukraine war is her baby as was the Iraq war. She represents the type of people that come out of our top universities and enter our foreign service.

And you wonder why we Americans have been involved in so many unsuccessful wars!
